Kimel is one of the very few estates in PNG and is situated to the north of Mount Hagen. It operating its own wet and dry mill, covers 600 hectares and accepts the production of local and village plantations which covers an additional 1000 hectares. Growing Arusha, Bourbon, Typica varietals, the original trees on the estate were from the Jamaican Blue Mountains. A combination of the unique environment and plantation practices such using coffee pulp for fertiliser, dried husks for heating and fresh, unpolluted water from the mountains all add to the estates sustainability practices.
Kimel plantation was first established in 1974 by an Australian, Bobby Gibbs. It is now owned by traditional landowners, the Opais being the main tribe. Although locally owned, the plantation is managed by expatriate personnel, appointed by the local directors with extensive experience in plantation management. The estate is located in the Western Highlands in the Wahgi Valley approximately 50 Km south of Mount Hagen, near a small town called Banz. The elevation of the estate is 1500m above sea level and the soil is mostly rich sandy loam.
Cupping notes: Dark chocolate, honey, tropical fruit, low acidity, hints of pepper in darker roasts. Well balanced body and clean aftertaste.
